His first steps

Christo Vladimiroff Javacheff, known as Christo, was born in Bulgaria in 1935. He studied at the Fine Arts School in Sofia, in discord with the communist regime in place. He rubbed shoulders with the New Realists, artists who favored “action-spectacles” and worked with the materials of the consumer society that emerged (plastic, garbage, cars …).

His approach and his actions

In Paris, Christo married Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, whom he combined with all these titanic creations in-situ.
Their artistic project is to pack monuments, places, parks in order to create an unusual and ephemeral work. Each project requires several years of preparation.

We owe them notably the “Surrounded Islands”, the encircling of the Biscayne Islands in Miami by fuchsia pink polypropylene (1983); the packaging of the Pont-Neuf in Paris in 1985 by ochre-yellow polyester; the packaging of the Reichstag in Berlin in 1995 by a silver fabric or “The floating Piers” on Lake Iseo in Italy, an installation of floating platforms linking the islands of the lake in 2016, a project carried out in the absence of Jeanne-Claude, who died in 2009.
Christo died in New York on May 31, 2020.
